We're going to keep this running for a few months, so we've made some minor changes to the rules.

General:

  1. Per month, send your $10 donation to the Dallas L. Pace Special Needs Trust (mail your check to Jan Brown, 61 Brown Road, Ithaca, NY 14850)
  2. Keep track of your daily walking, running or biking mileage from the 1st of the month through the end of the month
  3. Send periodic updates and your final mothly total to Jan Brown (jmb@cbord.com) (final totals need to be in by the 2nd of the following month)
  4. Automatically be entered into a drawing for one $25 prize at the end of the month (only participants who submit mileage totals are eligible)
When you sign up, Jan will send you an email with an Excel spreadsheet to track your mileage, and you will be assigned a Participant Number.  We will be tracking the mileage here on the web site by Participant Number.  We'll also want to know if you are hoofing it or pedaling (or both).

What if I don't have a pedometer or really can't do too much walking?

Everyone is welcome.  This challenge isn't a competition between particpants - we're here to support Dallas and we just hope you have some fun doing it.  So no matter how many or how few miles you can go, if you want to participate, please do.  If you don't have a pedometer, try walking a route that you can measure using your car's trip meter.  Or just make a reasonable estimate.  If your health or other factors prevent you from walking, go ahead and claim a mile a week.  If you can get out there, have fun!

Teams:

We've already gotten questions like  "can we particpate as a group?" - and we decided the answer is "sure".  If you want to particpate as a 'team', please identify one person in your group to be the main contact - that person will be responsible for contacting Jan and letting her know how many people are in your group.  Each team member is expected to donate - the main contact would be responsible for getting the donations to Jan.  (Note regarding the prize drawing - only the 'team name' will go into the hat at the end of the month.  If a team name is pulled for a prize, they get to decide how to distribute it amongst themselves.)

What if I walk/run AND ride?

Whether you are an individual participant or participating as a team, we would like you to submit 'foot' miles separately from 'bike' miles.  We might be able to have a little mapping fun with that later on.  (If you end up submitting 'combined' mileage, please let us know when you submit it.)

The Destination:

A quick check of the internet pulled up seven U.S. cities/towns named "Dallas".  If you started in Ithaca, NY, could you walk/ride to Dallas in a month - and if so, which one? Just how far will you get?  How far will we get as a group?  (For the 'detail-oriented': a thorough search a little latter found 15 cities/towns - with Alabama actually having two - and Dallas, IA is actually Melcher-Dallas)

Distances from Ithaca to places named "Dallas" and the approximate miles/day average needed to get there in 31 days:
Dallas, PA 135 miles 4.5 miles/day avg
Dallas, North Carolina 725 miles 23.5 miles/day avg
Dallas, Georgia 965 miles 31 miles/day avg
Dallas, Iowa 1003 miles 32.5 miles/day avg
Dallas, South Dakota 1383 miles 44.5 miles/day avg
Dallas, Texas 1512 miles 49 miles/day avg
Dallas, Oregon 2847 miles 92 miles/day avg

Can we make the full loop?  If  we go to PA, then NC, then GA, then TX, then OR, then SD, then IA and back to Ithaca, the route is 6840 miles.
